First day of AT: Access to Literacy Class. Enlightening and exciting...

Reading is a complex process involving the visual cortex, responsible for visual processing, the temporal lobe responsible for auditory processing and the frontal lobe, where executive functioning, or meaning is developed.

Great Apps:

Have you ever considered just sending a voice message (podcast) instead of writing an email? Well, the future has arrived in the "Voice Memos" app from the itunes store. This app is excellent for students to respond orally, rather than in writing. It is easily emailed as an audio clip. It can record for an unlimited amount of time. Excellent app for students requiring accommodations for written responses.
Reluctant readers need encouragement to look, listen and attend to the story. Stories from "Moving Tales", such as "Twas the Night Before Christmas" are fantastic in keeping a student engaged in the story. Music, movement, terrific voices, make any of the "Moving Tales" books, excellent app choices for the reluctant reader.

Magnifying text is becoming more relevant to me as I get older. The free app, "Lighted Magnifier for iPhone and iPod Touch", is a useful tool and can be used with any of the devices that have built-in cameras. Once installed, it magnifies anything that the device moves over. It can increase the magnification up to 4 times.

Converting currency, temperature, distances etc. has never been easier with the app, "Convertbot" for the iPhone or iPodTouch. Although there is a slight cost to this app, it is worth it. It has the ability to convert a variety of units as well as currency. In fact, I have used it to plan my currency conversions for all of my travels abroad.

The "Egg Timer" free app is not only great for cooking eggs, it also can be a worthwhile tool in the classroom. Students can be prompted to complete a task within a specific span of time. When the time is concluded, a chicken squawks. Lots of fun!
